Expressions of Interest are invited from persons interested in a career as a Medical Education Officer. Numerous opportunities exist in a variety of Queensland Health facilities across the state.

What is a Medical Education Officer (MEO)

A Medical Education Officer, or ‘MEO’, works in partnership with a Director of Clinical Training (DCT) to provide education and support to the junior doctors in their hospital. Within each hospital, the MEO is also responsible for facilitating the accreditation process of the Postgraduate Medical Education Council of Queensland (PMCQ) for the junior doctor training program. The MEO is an integral member of the Medical Education Unit, where they utilise their educational expertise to coordinate and oversee junior doctor training and development. The tasks that they perform are multiple and varied, but often include:

  1. Organising regular education and training sessions for junior doctors
  2. Organising tutorials for International Medical Graduates
  3. Monitoring the progress of junior doctors in conjunction with their supervisor and the DCT
  4. Providing feedback on education sessions to clinical teachers
  5. Coordinating student electives across the hospital
  6. Looking at research and innovations in learning/teaching to enhance the junior doctor education program

A Medical Education Officer will possess either of the following minimum qualifications:

  1. Bachelor Degree in a relevant discipline; or
  2. Professional clinical qualification with other formal qualifications in education and/or clinical teaching.

The following would also be advantageous for performing your role:

  1. A background in adult education;
  2. Interest or experience in clinical education and training.

In the coming years, MEOs will be in increasing demand because of the need to support additional pre-vocational doctors and manage growing student numbers.  For a more detailed overview of the MEO role, please read Queensland Health’s Corporate Role Statement.
