Welcome to Queensland Health’s Pre-Registration Pharmacy Recruitment for 2008/2009 – this applies for placement in Queensland Health Hospitals commencing in August 2008 or January 2009.
All Queensland public hospitals employing Pre-Registration Pharmacy Graduates for 2008/2009 are participating in this recruitment program.
This process is to give you a more convenient method of applying to multiple facilities through one application. You are given the opportunity to nominate three facilities where you would like to undertake your pre-registration year. The information you provide will be forwarded to each of your preferred facilities for their consideration.

To provide a learning environment where experience, skills and understanding of hospital pharmacy practice can be gained by the graduate to complete requirements for registration as a Pharmacist in Queensland at the end of the prescribed training period.
To provide an opportunity for Graduate Pharmacists to complete their Pre-registration year.
Under the professional supervision of a Registered Pharmacist primary duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Participate in professional projects within the department and during the course of the pre-registration period undertake and complete a practice research project.

Applications are open to Pharmacy students expecting to graduate from Australian universities in July 2008 and November 2009 and available to commence employment in August 2008 and January 2009 respectively. Note: Overseas APEC candidates can not apply through this process but may express their interest by going to www.health.qld.gov.au/allied/eoi.asp

The completed Application Form with Assessment Criteria, Curriculum Vitae and Academic Results should be saved as either a Word (doc), a rich text format (rtf), JPEG Image, PDF (Adobe Acrobat) or Bitmap Image document and sent as an attachment to your covering email. Do not include the form or any of the above requested information in the body of the email message.
Academic Results may be downloaded from the University website and sent as your initial copy but an original copy must be brought to interview.
NO other documentation apart from what has been requested should be submitted at the time of lodging your application.
NB: It is the responsibility of each applicant to provide your nominated referees with a referee form. These forms must be returned by the referee directly to Recruitment Support Services Team by the closing date of Monday, 25 February.

Your application will be forwarded to each of your three preferred hospitals and candidates for interview will be determined by the Director of Pharmacy at each hospital.
Interviews will be conducted in the week commencing 7 April 2008. Separate interviews will not be necessary for each hospital as interview panels will be arranged. You may be invited to attend more than one interview on the day.
Please note Queensland Health is unable to assist applicants with travel expenses to attend interviews.

Feedback is provided upon request, to all applicants by a member of the selection committee or the Coordinator of the Pre-registration Pharmacy program. Refer to the Participating Public Health Care Facilities section.
You will be made one offer of employment by a Director of Pharmacy. Once you have accepted the offer, a letter of appointment will be sent from the relevant hospital.

Assessment Criteria are the skills, knowledge, abilities, experience and mandatory qualifications which have been identified as being the primary factors needed to perform the duties of the position.
The Assessment Criteria form the core component of the entire selection process, identifying the qualities required for the position in terms of qualifications, knowledge, skills and abilities.
Describe whatever relevant experience you have, outlining how you have used your knowledge, skills and abilities and relate this to your capacity to meet the requirements (or duties) of the job. You can also draw examples from non-work activities that may demonstrate skills and knowledge relevant to the Assessment Criteria.
The wording of the Assessment Criteria will indicate the level of knowledge, skills and abilities you require to successfully fill the position. Some examples of words used are explained as follows: ‘Possess a basic understanding of, or ‘an ability to acquire knowledge of’ means that you have the potential to acquire the skill or knowledge.’
Please specifically address each of the Assessment Criteria and answer Questions which are attached to the Application Form. As part of your application we would like you to answer three questions. Your answers should be no more than half a page in length for each question.
1. Tell us why you have chosen to undertake your pre-registration year in hospital pharmacy.
2. Where do you see yourself in your pharmacy career in five years time?
3. Describe your personal attributes and experiences, work or otherwise, that equip you for a career in hospital pharmacy.

You could nominate persons from your placements, the university, or from any other vocational work you have under taken.
Referee Report Forms received after Monday, 25 February 2008 will NOT be included with your application.
A Curriculum Vitae / Resume is to be included with your application. Curriculum Vitae/Resume should include employment history, educational qualifications, names of your referees and clinical experience.
Should you be invited for an interview you will be required to sign your resume/curriculum vitae, to verify that it is true and correct at that time.
“Queensland Health has a responsibility to:
The Director-General of Queensland Health requires all persons recommended for appointment to Queensland Health for periods in excess of three months to be subject to a pre-appointment criminal history check.
Persons recommended for appointment to Queensland Health for periods in excess of three months will be asked to provide adequate proof of identity and written consent for Queensland Health to conduct a criminal history check through the Queensland Police Service. Failure to provide adequate documentation and consent without reasonable explanation within seven days of being requested will result in disqualification from further consideration for appointment.
Appointment to Queensland Health cannot be finalised until the criminal history checking process is completed. Depending on the relevant duties of the job, having a criminal history may not necessarily result in disqualification for appointment.
If, after obtaining a criminal history report, the Director-General or delegate considers that the recommended person may be unsuitable, the recommended person may make written or oral representations before any final decision is made.
Please be aware that any statement in an application which is found to be deliberately misleading will result in disqualification from further consideration. If you are employed in the Queensland Public Service, it may result in disciplinary action.”
After interview a criminal history check maybe conducted on the recommended persons for these jobs. Any documentation that will need to be returned with the Criminal History Check form will be explained on the form or in the covering letter.
The pharmacy pre-registration trainee position is a temporary appointment for 52 weeks. This includes four weeks paid leave. Subject to availability, some hospitals may offer at a local level, an extension of 12 months as a registered pharmacist.

District Health Service Employees are paid according to the District Health Services Employees Award – State. The Pre-registration year is a PO2(2) salary which is $1846.50 per fortnight as at 1 September 2007. Electronic copies of these rates are available on the Queensland Health website at www.health.qld.gov.au/workforus and copies of the Award are available on Queensland Health’s intranet site – QHEPS (Queensland Health Electronic Publishing Service). The normal working week is 38 hours. Pre-registration pharmacists can expect to be included into the existing rostering arrangements of the department. Depending on the particular hospital these may include weekends and Public Holidays.
The Pharmacists Registration Board of Queensland is the registering body for pharmacists in Queensland and is responsible for the administration of the Pharmacists Registration Act 2001 and the Pharmacists Registration Regulations 2001.
The Board administers the Act and Regulations with the object of: protecting the public by ensuring health care is delivered by registrants in a professional, safe and competent way; upholding standards of practice within the profession; and maintaining public confidence in the profession. Where appropriate the Board may develop its own standards of practice or endorse Standards and Guidelines developed by or on behalf of the profession.
