Chillagoe is a small, isolated and historic town situated on the western side of the beautiful Atherton Tablelands. Originally a cattle grazing area, Chillagoe became a successful mining town when copper and silver deposits were discovered in 1887. Gold, silver, copper and lead were extracted in the region, attracting a population of 10,000 at its peak. Speculated to be the next “Broken Hill”, the region experienced a major and disappointing bust when the supply dried up. The mine closed in 1943. Today, local industries include a limeworks, marble mining, cattle and tourism. Chillagoe has much to offer visitors, from stunning outback scenery and historical mining attractions to aboriginal art sites and spectacular limestone caves.
