< BACK

Herberton is a small pretty heritage town located on the beautiful Atherton Tablelands of far north Queensland. The oldest town on the Tableland, Herberton was established in 1880 after rich tin deposits were discovered at the nearby Herbert River. It became the most prominent tin mine in Australia, the population rising to 8,000 at its peak. Although tin is still mined in the region, Herberton is now famous for its historical houses, some of which have been heritage listed. Local industries include orchards, vegetable producers and vineyards. Popular with commuters, Herberton offers a laid back, country lifestyle.
