About Lockhart River

Lockhart River is a welcoming Indigenous community situated on the far north coast of Cape York Peninsula. The community was founded in 1927.

Lockhart River is a community with a peaceful and simple existence. The town’s surroundings of rainforest, mountain ranges and the ocean make it an ideal home for the environment enthusiast.

Working in Lockhart River

The Lockhart River Primary Health Care Centre provides 24 hour accident and emergency, aged care, child and adolescent health, family relationships, health promotion and injury prevention services.

Visiting services include the Royal Flying Doctor Service, child health, obstetrician and gynaecologist, occupational therapist, chest (thoracic) specialist, nutritionist/dietician, ophthalmologist, public health, environmental health, sexual health, physician, paediatrician, mental health, dental services, women's health, optometrist, Queensland Ambulance Service, family health and radiographer services.

Outreach services from Weipa include sexual health, alcohol and drug, mental health and women's health.

Services provided by the Royal Flying Doctor Service consist of weekly general practice, weekly child health, bi-annual dental, three monthly women’s health and psychology services.

A number of services visit from the Cairns Base hospital every three months. These services include general medical, optometry, paediatrics, orthopaedics and thoracic as well as obstetrics and gynaecology services.

Community health services include antenatal clinics, nutritional health, school/child health screening, women’s health clinic, diabetic care and a chronic disease program.

With its pristine beaches, the Lockhart River is an excellent spot for fishing, with local catch including rock lobster, mud crabs and reef fish.

Lockhart River has a relatively young population with over 68 percent of residents under 35 years old. There are a range of traditional languages spoken in Lockhart River communities. The local Lockhart River Artist Centre has achieved national and international success through a group of its artists known as ‘The Art Gang’. Their work is influenced by the traditional culture and values of their people. Art pieces are available through the Artist Centre or through a number of national galleries.
