Emerald is a large country town located on the Nogoa River in central Queenland. Established in 1879 to support the Central West railway line from Rockhampton, Emerald was a small town supporting local pastoralists. The town remained small until the 1940’s when the region’s fertility was recognised and the area became a prominent grain production area. Today, Emerald grows a rich diversity of crops including cotton, wheat, peanuts, citrus fruit and flowers. Emerald also serves as a dormitory town for several coal mines, including Gregory, Gordonstone, Crinum and Ensham Mines. Named after “Emerald Downs Hill”, a lush green emerald hill located near the town, Emerald has grown to become the major regional centre of the Central Highlands and gateway to the central western district.
