Alpha is a small country town situated on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range in central Queensland. Established in 1884 as a cattle grazier outpost, Alpha can still boast of being part of one of the largest cattle producing shires in central western Queensland. Other industries include gems, grain, oilseed, soybean, cotton and citrus farming. Alpha is the administrative centre of the Jericho Shire and enjoys all the conveniences of a larger rural centre. Self-proclaimed as “the gateway to the west”, Alpha is probably better known as “the town of murals”. The town features 27 large building murals depicting pioneering and contemporary life painted by local artists. Adding to the town’s charm are the streets named after poets, with Shakespeare Street the main Avenue. Surrounded by the beauty of Queensland’s outback, Alpha offers an idyllic peaceful lifestyle.
