Barcaldine is a small pastoral and rail town located in the heart of central Queensland. Known as the “Garden City of the West”, Barcaldine is a charming town with fertile soil and a good supply of artesian bore water, ideal for gardens, parks and ovals. The town is famous for being the centre of the Shearer’s Strike of 1891 and the formation of the Australian Labor Party. A 200 year old ghost gum known as the “Tree of Knowledge” marks where the strike meetings were held, a poignant reminder of Barcaldine’s tumultuous past. Today, Barcaldine is a convenient centre for wool growers and cattle graziers. It is situated at the crossroad of the highways and byways in central western Queensland with both rail and airport facilities and extensive shopping conveniences.
