Mount Isa Health Service District
About Camooweal

Camooweal is a country town situated 13 kilometres from the Northern Territory border. Established in 1884, Camooweal grew and prospered as a service centre for surrounding cattle properties until the escalating growth of Mount Isa rendered the town somewhat redundant to the cattle industry. Camooweal is now referred to as the “Gateway to the Northern Territory/Queensland” and is popular for adventurers as it is located over a myriad of rare sinkholes and caves dating back 500 million years.

Living in Camooweal

Camooweal is located about a two hour drive from Mount Isa on the Barkly Highway. Due to Camooweal's small size and the vastness of the Mount Isa
region, Camooweal is often considered a 'suburb' of Mount Isa.

If there's something you want that can't be sought in Camooweal take the two hour expedition to Mount Isa, you'll find it there.

The seasons in Camooweal can only be described as 'wet' and 'dry' with warm to hot temperatures all year round.

Definitely check out the famous Camooweal caves. The caves are actually
sinkholes in the ground caused by water that has been percolated through 500 million year-old layers of soluble dolomite creating caverns linked by vertical shafts up to 75 metres deep. The caves are not accessible to visitors and you should be
extremely cautious around the edge of the sinkholes. The Injilujji and Thethanu
Indigenous peoples of this area have a number of dreamtime legends about this area.
