Karumba is a major fishing port located on the mouth of the Norman River on the coast of the Gulf of Carpentaria. Originally a telegraph station, Karumba was formerly known as Kimberley and was once the base for the Royal Australian Air Force during World War II. By the 1970s the fishing and prawning industries boomed and Karumba became the centre of both industries for the Gulf of Carpentaria. Karumba offers a relaxed and casual lifestyle in the picturesque setting of striking sunsets, pristine beaches and clear blue waters.
The Karumba Primary Health Centre is staffed by a Director of Nursing and a registered nurse. The centre provides a full range of health services including pharmacy, Meals on Wheels and the HACC program.
A number of visiting services are available to the area including a mobile women’s health nurse, chest physician, dietician, physiotherapist, podiatrist and mental health professionals.
Bring a fishing rod. Living in Karumba, no other possession will be more important to you than this piece of equipment. Except perhaps your swimming costume.
Adopt your very own Barramundi and learn all about this remarkable fish at the Barramundi Discovery Centre. It is the only hatchery in the world that breeds the Gulf strain of Barramundi for eventual release into the Gulf river systems and dams. Then head to the Karumba Pub or one of the cafes to sample some of the finest seafood – including those Barramundi.
The Gulf of Carpentaria is at its most magnificent at sunset and can be best admired from one of the cruise boats or Karumba Point beach, the only beach accessible via car in the Carpentaria Shire.
