Chinchilla is small rural town located on the Warrego Highway in Queensland’s western downs region. Originally a sheep grazing area, the town was established in 1878 when the western railway was built. Today, it is the administrative and commercial centre for the Chinchilla Shire and has a thriving economy based on surrounding graziers and grain growers. Other local industries include timber, grapes, strawberries and melons. Known as the “melon capital”, the Chinchilla shire produces a quarter of Australia’s rockmelons, watermelons and honeydews. A biennial “Melon Festival” is held to celebrate the produce, a popular event that draws large crowds. Chinchilla is a vibrant and dynamic community, offering a relaxed country lifestyle with excellent services and amenities. Population: 3,250 Queensland Health facilities in District: 19
