Gatton is a thriving country town located in the Lockyer Valley, west of Brisbane in south east Queensland. It is the administrative and commercial centre for the Gatton Shire, a rich agricultural and pastoral region producing vegetables, dairy products, cattle, pigs and timber. Gatton was one of Queensland’s earliest rural settlements, established in the 1850s as a major changeover point for mail service horses travelling west to the Darling Downs from Brisbane. With the coming of the railway line in 1875, the town rapidly grew, becoming an important service centre for surrounding farms. In 1897, Australia’s first land development and animal husbandry training institution was opened in Gatton as the “Gatton Agricultural College”. This landmark college is now part of Queensland University and is a significant training centre in agribusiness, agriculture, animal studies, environmental management and horticulture. Gatton offers a quiet and relaxed country lifestyle with quick access to Brisbane. Population: 5,350 Queensland Health facilities in District: 19
