Queensland Health Young Women and Alcohol Campaign

Make Up Your Own Mind About Drinking

National research highlights that more than half of young Queensland women aged 18-22 years consume alcohol at harmful levels both in the short and long-term, putting their health and wellbeing at risk. Research, however, tells us that many young women have a desire to drink less but simply have not yet found the path to doing so.

If you’ve ever given some thought to reducing the amount of alcohol you drink, you’re definitely not alone. Research conducted by Queensland Health has found that some young women are reluctantly still stuck in a state of risky drinking because of social pressures. These women have discussed how they would like to drink in a more 'mature' manner where drinking alcohol is part of a good social occasion, as opposed to drinking to the point of intoxication.

The Young Women & Alcohol Campaign was developed to encourage and support young Queensland women to take control of their drinking.  The latest phase of the campaign extends from the “Make up your own mind about drinking” advertising which ran from 2004 to 2007, and highlights to young women the benefits of saying no when you want to. It aims to empower young women by showing how good it feels to take control of their risky drinking.

“It feels good to say no when you want to say no”.

Sometimes it can be hard to say no to a drink when you’re out with friends who are drinking. We don't expect that you'll give up drinking altogether.  We just want you to feel empowered, and to know that it really is okay to say "No thanks" if you want to, or to stay in if you really don't feel like a big night out on the drink.

Don't forget making your own choices, and saying no when you want to, can feel really good. For more information visit the Feeling Good website.
