Hello, my name's Samantha Mulholland and I'm one of the nurse practitioners involved in the Nurse Practitioner Innovation Project. The Nurse Practitioner Innovation Project aligns with the Innovation Funds criteria by creating an innovative and flexible model of care for remote area nurses in the Torres Strait Islands. The overall aim of the project is, develop a community of practise, provide expert nursing mentorship and clinical supervision to clinicians working in the remote locations of the Torres Strait Islands, and promote togetherness by implementing a model of care, which reduces the feelings of professional isolation. The four main project objectives for the nurse practitioner model are firstly to develop a community of practise for the remote area nurses. When they come together on a regular basis to do professional development, clinical collaboration and clinical mentorship, and provide professional and personal support to each other. The next objective is to develop a remote area nurse career pathway with mentored progression for remote area nurses who wish to continue on to become a remote and isolated practise endorsed nurse or nurse practitioner. The next objective is improving nurse satisfaction with an engaged and productive workforce, which is well-governed and working within their full scope of practise. And the final objective is to improve patient outcomes by closing the gap through the provision of accessible timely clinical expertise to support existing remote area nurses. So the TCHHS received $765,832 from the Innovation Fund. This went towards the employment of two nurse practitioners for the project and allowing them to travel to the outer islands of the Torres Straits. The Innovation Fund money also went towards bringing the remote area nurses in from the Torres Strait Islands primary healthcare clinics into Thursday Island to provide a connect workshop for them. The major challenge of our project was the COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, as we were supposed to be travelling around to each island, we were no longer able to do this. As there was biosecurity zones put in place. One nurse practitioner then had to stay here in Cairns to provide telehealth and online support to the nurses up in the remote areas. And one nurse practitioner was located up in the Torres Strait Islands and had to spend longer periods of time on each island. The challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic turned into an unexpected opportunity for us. As the nurses were more isolated than normal we were able to provide more support by promoting a virtual coffee club and a community of practise for the nurses. Also, the one nurse that was travelling up in the Torres Strait was able to spend more time on each island as they were not able to travel as freely as we had originally expected. The other unexpected opportunity was that the nurse practitioner that was located in Cairns was able to spend more time working on the TCHHS Nurse Practitioner Strategy. The overall response to the model has been very positive and parts of the project will be incorporated into business as usual. For example, the virtual coffee club and the community of practise. Remote area nursing is a specialised area of nursing where nurses work in an advanced practise role in remote areas of Australia. The project has shown that by implementing a mentoring and clinical supervision model, having nurse practitioners employed to promote support and encourage lifelong learning increases remote area nurses' satisfaction and reduces their feelings of professional isolation. The development of the virtual coffee club and the community of practise were the major outcomes for our project as it promotes togetherness and increases support for the nurses, promotes lifelong learning, and aligns with the quadruple aims for effective primary health care. Developing more nurse practitioner positions in the Torres and Cape not only has an economic benefit, but also fills the health care gaps in remote areas. I hope that you found this presentation from the Nursing and Midwifery Showcase Series informative. Please take the time to check out other projects that highlight nursing and midwifery excellence in Queensland Health. Thank you very much.
