Transition to Community Control (Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health Branch)

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander participation in and control of primary health care services has been identified at both a state and national level as an effective action to improve health outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and contribute to closing the gap in health outcomes between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and other Australians.

A Transition to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Control of Health in Queensland: A Draft Strategic Policy Framework has been developed for public consultation.  The draft framework outlines the policy directions that will enable greater Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community control over the planning, management and delivery of local primary health care services. The draft framework was developed with key government and non-government stakeholders.

Following public consultation, feedback will be incorporated to finalise the framework in mid 2012.

Three communities have been identified for initial transition to community control: Mapoon and Kowanyama (in Cape York Health Service District) and Yarrabah (in Cairns and Hinterland Health Service District).
