About our Department
Cairns Hospital is the major Obstetrics and Gynaecology referral centre for Cairns and Far North Queensland. There are over 2700 births annually. Most gynaecological procedures, apart from procedures such as cancer surgery, complicated urogynaecology cases can be performed here. The hospital specialists also visit smaller regional and remote towns across the Hospital and Health Service area to see outpatients e.g. Weipa, Thursday Island, Lockhart River, Cooktown.

Principle House Officers (PHO)
Cairns is the largest and best known centre for the RANZCOG Advanced Diploma in Australia, and positions are highly sought after. We take 4 trainees annually, for 12 month appointments.
ITP (Integrated Training Program )Trainees
We have one RANZCOG ITP training program, with the rotation of Cairns, Townsville and Mater Mothers. A 4th year trainee rotates from Logan.
We have 4 elective or Senior Registrar positions.
- 2 general Senior Registrar positions
- 1 'outreach' registrar to assist the consultant visiting Cape York indigenous outreach centres
- 1 Obstetric Medical Registrar - a senior trainee who liaises with the Department of Medicine and manages complicated pregnancies.
Interns and Junior House Officers (JHO)
5 JHOs and interns rotate through the department for 10 week terms.
Staff Specialists, Senior Medical Officers and Visiting Medical Officers
