About our Department
Cairns Hospital is the major Surgery referral centre for Cairns and Far North Queensland. Most General Surgical, Plastic Surgery, ENT, Ophthalmology and Maxillo-facial procedures can be performed here. The hospital specialists also visit smaller regional and remote towns across the service to see outpatients and perform minor surgery e.g. Innisfail, Atherton and Mareeba. Inter service outreach to Weipa, Thursday Island and Cooktown are also performed regularly.
Fourth and fifth year medical students are trained at Cairns Hospital as part of the James Cook University medical training program.

Registrars and Principle House Officers (PHO)
Cairns is a training hospital for Surgeons through the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in Australia, with three accredited SET 2+ general surgery positions, and two accredited SET 1 general surgery positions. We also have 6 General Surgery PHO's, one Plastic Surgery PHO, one ENT PHO, and two Ophthalmology PHO's.
All the registrar and PHO positions are 12 month appointments.
Interns and Junior House Officers (JHO)
7 JHOs and interns rotate through the department for 10 week terms.
Staff Specialists, Senior Medical Officers and Visiting Medical Officers
