Medical Oncology

Overview

The Department of Medical Oncology provides:

  • Management of patients with solid tumours, including treatment with chemotherapy and coordinating treatments from other specialities
  • Consultancy service to other medical departments within the Cairns Hospital
  • Phone consultations for General Practitioners
  • Participation in Multi-Disciplinary Team meetings at the Cairns Hospital
  • Delivery of chemotherapy and cancer treatments in a safe and caring environment
  • Psychosocial support to cancer patients and their families from dedicated psychologists, social workers and nursing staff
  • Outpatient and inpatient chemotherapy

  • For after hours treatment, contact the Emergency Department

Haematology

The Clinical Haematology service within Cancer Care Services at the Cairns Hospital currently has two Clinical Haematologists, Dr Andrew Shearer and Dr Ketan Bavishi. The Haematologists are supported by 1 non training registrar, who rotates every 10 weeks and 1 resident / intern who rotates every 8-10 weeks along with Oncology Nursing Staff and Allied Health.  Cairns Hospital currently does not have any specialised Haematology Nursing or Junior Medical Staff.

Currently the Cancer Care Clinical Haematology service provides the following:

  •  General inpatient consultation service
  •  Outpatient clinics - Liz Plummner Cancer Care Centre
 
  •  Fortnightly Innisfail Clinic and Chemotherapy service
 
  •  Fortnightly Atherton Clinic

Multisciplinary Teams

Multidisciplinary care is an integrated team approach to the care of patients with cancer. Multidisciplinary care provides a flexible framework for implementation of care that can be tailored according to the local situation. This type of care benefits the patients, health professionals & health services by providing increased patient satisfaction, educational opportunities & streamlining care

The principles of Multidisciplinary care emphasize the need for:

  • A team approach involving core disciplines integral to good patient care, including clinical & allied health professional & primary care
  • Communication between all team regarding treatment planning
  • Access to the full therapeutic range regardless of geographical remoteness or size of institution
  • Provision of care in accord with national agreed standards
  • Involvement of patients in decisions about the care

Overview of Multidisciplinary Team Meetings

Scheduled forums of core and invited members are held regularly for the purpose of prospective treatment and care planning of newly diagnosed cancer patients and those requiring review of treatment or palliative care. Members include:

  • Chairperson
  • MDM Coordinator
  • Cancer Care Coordinators
  • Core team members – Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Surgical teams Pathology, Radiology, Specialist Physicians, Registered Nurses, Supportive Care, Allied Health, Breast Care Nurses, Bowel Screening Nurse and Indigenous Liaison Office

Multidisciplinary Team Meeting currently being held at the Liz Plummer Cancer Care Centre are:

Breast MDT Held every Friday afternoon commencing at 4.00 pm
Colorectal MDT Held every Friday morning commencing at 8.00 am
Lung MDT Held fortnightly Thursday morning commencing at 8.00am
Head & Neck Held every Tuesday morning via Video Conference with the Townsville Hospital commencing at 8.30 am
