Community Consultation Committees

VACANCY - Call for Expressions of Interest on Community Consultation Committee

There is currently a vacancy on our Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (Health Service) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health* (representing Cassowary Coast).

Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander community members from the Cassowary Coast are encouraged to submit their Expression of Interest to become a member on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Comittee - more information can be found in the Position Description.

Please complete the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Application Form and email it along with a copy of your resume by Monday 17 October 2016.

*Under s25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991, there is a genuine occupational requirement for the incumbent to be Indigenous to the Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community - the successful applicant will represent the interests around Cassowary Coast.

What to expect during recruitment and selection

A Health Service selection panel:

  • reviews expressions of interests and short-lists applicants for an interview,
  • conducts interviews,
  • selects applicants for appointment onto the Committee,
  • seeks the Health Service Board endorsement on selected applicants and
  • appoints applicants as Community Representatives onto the Committee.

What to expect if you are appointed

Committees generally meet quarterly for two-three hours. Committee members may be tasked by the Health Service Board to go out to their 'communities' and request feedback on specific topics and provide that feedback to the Health Service for consideration and implementation where appropriate. Committee members may hear of collective community issues and concerns they can raise through their Committee for broader consideration by the Health Service.

Committes are guided by a Terms of Reference. Each chair of the Community Consultation Committees has a seat at the Community Advisory Group which is the conduit body between the community and the Health Service Board.

Appointed community members (excluding Health Service staff and local government representatives) are remunerated for their attendance at meetings.  Committee members are encouraged to attend other Committee meetings as a guest for information sharing and lateral movements.

For more information please contact the Consumer and Community Engagement Coordinator on 07 4226 3243, or visit our Get Involved page.

Who are the Community Consultation Committees?

The Community Consultation Committees are entities consisting of patients, carers, consumers, community members, local government representatives and Health Service staff who are passionate about the quality and safety of healthcare provided to members of our community.

What is their purpose?

The purpose of the Community Consultation Committees is to provide advice to the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Board (Board) on local health care services from a consumer and community perspective.

How do they interact with the Health Service?

Committee members:

  • Consult community members about their experience of health care services provided.
  • Collate all of the information gathered from community members.
  • Inform the Health Service on community members' perspectives about their experience of health care services provided.
  • Work together with staff to implement changes.

The Committees, reporting through the Community Advisory Group (the conduit between the community and the Board), are accountable to the Board.
