Pregnancy: Feeding Your Baby

How you decide to feed your baby, like all decisions in the parenthood journey, is best made with accurate and up to date information. Cairns Hospital, Queensland Health and the World Health Organisation recognises and promotes breastmilk as the ideal food for babies. We recommend that all babies are exclusively breastfed (no other food or fluids required) for the first 6 months, appropriate solids can then be introduced and breastfeeding can and should continue up to two (2) years.

How you decide to feed your baby is often a decision based on previous experiences, what your own mother did, what you have seen other people do and your own knowledge and ideas. Pregnancy is a great time to start thinking about how you will feed your baby and start to gather the information and support you need.

Cairns Hospital is a Baby Friendly Health Initiative (BFHI) accredited hospital. BFHI accreditation supports the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding, which promotes breastfeeding as the norm and where the mother's informed choice of infant feeding is encouraged, respected and supported.
