Cairns Hospital provides physiotherapy services to inpatients and outpatients Monday – Friday with hours of operation 8:00am-4:30pm daily. A rostered weekend service operates for acute inpatients only and an on call service runs on public holidays and evenings/overnight. A seven day physiotherapy roster also operates in the Orthopaedic ward, MAU ward and the Emergency Department between the hours of 7:30am -5:30pm. A rostered overtime weekend and public holiday service operates for category 1 inpatients in non seven day service acute wards and an evening/ night on-call service operates seven days per week for acutely deteriorating inpatients.
Inpatients: Referrals can be made directly to the ward/clinic Physiotherapist by ieMR consult which registers the referral on the Multi Patient Task List. Inpatient Physiotherapists can be contacted by phone and during huddles to discuss referrals. Referrals can also be made by Patient Flow Manager however this functionality is planned to transition to IEMR consult in the near future.
Outpatients: Referrals for outpatient physiotherapy can be directed to the Physiotherapy email Ch-Physio@health.qld.gov.au or to physiotherapy via the Scheduled Care Unit.
Referrals for outpatient physiotherapy may be received from:
- Physiotherapists working within the Cairns Hospital and other facilities
- Medical/nursing/other allied health staff within Cairns Hospital and other CHHHS facilities
- General Practitioners
- Specialist Outpatient clinics – for specific Specialist Physiotherapy clinics such as Paediatric Orthopaedic Physiotherapy Service, NOPSC, Urology and Vestibular Physiotherapy service.
The physiotherapy department receives many referrals and a waiting list exists for some services. All eligible referrals are prioritised via a triage process and patients will be contacted with an available appointment time by phone and/or letter.
Amputee Clinic: Referrals are received from within the hospital and from family or community services. Amputee clinic is held twice a monthly, and appointments can be made by calling the Rehabilitation Therapy Assistant on 4226 6123. The clinic is conducted in the Amputee Rehabilitation gym - D2.
Orthotic Clinic: Referrals must be received from a medical specialist and should be sent to the physiotherapy department or the Scheduled Care Unit. The clinic is held off site at the orthotic providers premises in Cairns.
Surgical Footwear Clinic: Referral must be from a specialist and should be sent to the physiotherapy department or the Scheduled Care Unit. The clinic is held off site at the Surgical Footwear providers premises in Cairns.
Cairns Hospital Physiotherapy has a failure to attend policy which will be discussed with patients on admission to the service.
