Junior House Officer / Senior House Officer

Purpose of role

  • To provide high quality clinical care to patients of Cairns Hospital.  In this position you will be employed by the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service (HHS).
    Hospital Facilities within the Hospital and Health Service:
    Atherton Hospital; Babinda Hospital; Chillagoe Hospital; Croydon Hospital; Forsayth Hospital
    Douglas Shire Multi-Purpose Health Service (Mossman Hospital); Georgetown Hospital
    Gordonvale Memorial Hospital; Herberton Hospital; Innisfail Hospital; Mareeba Hospital;
    Mount Garnet OPD; Ravenshoe Primary Health Care Centre; Tully Hospital; Yarrabah Hospital
  • As a HHS, it is necessary for us to respond to the service delivery needs and workloads within areas.    

Key skill requirements / competencies

Clinical Responsibilities

  • To provide quality medical care under the supervision and direction of Registrars and Senior Medical Staff
  • Conduct day to day review of patients
  • To ensure comprehensive, accurate and concise medical records are maintained for patients with an appropriate signed and dated legible entry in the patient's medical record on every attendance upon a patient.  The Medical Officer should also print his/her name under the signature
  • Contribute to quality patient care by participation in case planning which includes appropriate pre-admission planning, in-hospital care and discharge planning
  • To provide assistance with surgical procedures and outpatient clinics as directed by the Registrar and/or Consultant to which assigned
  • To arrange investigations, surgical treatment, medical treatment and discharge as directed by the Registrar and/or Consultant to which assigned
  • To ensure that discharge summaries and other correspondence are completed with minimum delay and that all such correspondence is complete prior to leaving the unit
  • Maintain good communications with all areas and disciplines within the health service and with local medical practitioners to ensure the smooth and effective operation of the hospital
  • Participate in clinical audit and quality programs as appropriate
  • To be "on-call" or participate in shift rosters is a requirement of the position
  • To participate in country relieving as required.  Up to 3 months may be spent relieving in other hospitals in the region
  • This position is employed by the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service which has the following hospitals facilities within the service: Cairns Hospital; Atherton Hospital; Babinda Hospital; Chillagoe hospital; Croydon Hospital; Forsayth Hospital; Douglas Shire Multi-Purpose Health Service (Mossman Hospital); Georgetown Hospital; Gordonvale Memorial Hospital; Herberton Hospital; Innisfail Hospital; Mareeba Hospital; Mount Garnet OPD, Ravenshoe Primary Health Care Centre; Tully Hospital; Yarrabah Hospital.  As a service, it is necessary for us to respond to the service delivery needs and workloads within areas

Administrative Responsibilities

  • Manage the administrative requirements of the hospital and patient care including ensuring discharge summaries and medico-legal correspondence are completed with minimal delay
  • Be aware of and adhere to all Queensland Health and hospital policies and procedures

Educational Responsibilities

  • To participate in clinical meetings that are undertaken by the clinical unit where stationed
  • To participate in continual professional improvement, medical education and JHO Education Programs
  • To participate in clinical meetings that are undertaken by the clinical unit where stationed
  • To participate in undergraduate teaching of medical students
  • Assist with case presentations at teaching meetings where necessary

Qualifications / Professional registration / Other requirements

  • Current registration or eligibility for registration as a medical practitioner with the Medical Board of Australia.
