EOI open for carer and consumer representatives
Wednesday 10 July 2019
The Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service’s Mental Health and Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Service (MHATODS) values the voice and opinions of people in our community and recognises the importance of working together.
One way we do this is by giving people with a lived experience of mental illness the opportunity to have their voice heard and to actively participate in shaping and continually improving services within the Cairns and Hinterland region as consumer and carer representatives.
We are currently seeking Expressions Of Interest from people who would like to join our Health Service as consumer or carer representative. If you;
- Believe it’s important people with a lived experience be part of shared decision-making with the Mental Health and Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs Service (MHATODS)
- Wish to be actively involved in shaping the direction and outcomes of service delivery for consumers and carers
- Have the capacity to work in partnership with MHATODS to ensure the consumer and carer perspective is heard and received in a respectful engagement
Then we want to hear from you!
Melissa has been a carer representative with MHATODS since 2016 and was involved in the collection of the MHATODS, Your Experience of Service Surveys in 2018 and 2019. Melissa visited several mental health facilities, speaking with consumers and their carers, assisted people with their surveys and promoted other avenues of feedback to further empower and support people in the community.
Melissa said she has felt her contributions are very welcomed by the Health Service and she has found the experience of being a carer representative fulfilling.
"For me, it's about breaking stigmas and working together towards healing and health literacy," Melissa said, "It's the best way we can get feedback to improve the Health Service and meeting the clinicians and consumers and coming together on the same platform is so rewarding."
Our consumer and carer representatives are paid for their time and may be involved in committees, working groups or special projects, or even on recruitment and selection panels for Mental Health and ATODS staff! If this sounds like an opportunity for you, please submit your completed Expression of Interest Form to Kristy.Greig@health.qld.gov.au by 2 August, 2019. You can download the form here (DOCX 152 kB).
