The Cairns Hospital Family Birth Centre is celebrating its first birthday (1 August) with the very first baby born in the centre, Gianna Mae Vozzo.

Gianna will attend the first birthday celebrations with her mother Julie, along with other mothers and babies, and pregnant mothers hoping to birth there soon.

Director of Intensive Care, Women’s and Perioperative, Susan Henderson said the world-class Family Birth Centre is available to mothers with a low-risk pregnancy who are participating in the Midwifery Group Practice model.

“This facility allows mums like Julie to bring their babies into the world in a home-like environment within the hospital,” she said.

The Cairns Hospital Midwifery Group Practice model means the expectant mother stays with the same midwife from her first antenatal appointment until four weeks after she and the baby are discharged from hospital.

Jo Taylor, Midwife Unit Manager of the Birth Suite and Midwifery Group Practice said the midwives enjoy working in the peaceful, relaxing, family environment;

“It is refreshing to see women in relatively undisturbed labour and birth, demonstrating the power of birth,” she said.

“They feel it normalises birth as another day in a family’s life where women come in, give birth and return home soon after

The Birth Centre is family friendly, children are often included in the event and there is space for them to relax out of the room if needed.”

Julie Vozzo said having Gianna Mae in the Family Birth Centre was very different to her two previous deliveries in the labor ward.

“It wasn’t so clinical and I felt very relaxed in the beautiful room,” she said.

“I said goodbye to my kids as they were going to bed at night, came into the birth suite, had Gianna and was home early the next day.”
