Central West Health COVID-19 Vaccination Program

Welcome to the Central West Hospital and Health Service (CWHHS) COVID-19 Vaccination Program information page.

The COVID-19 Vaccination Program will be rolled out across the Central West Queensland region from Monday 15 March 2021.

In coordination with the Queensland and Commonwealth governments, and other partners and providers, we’re aiming to vaccinate everyone in Central West Queensland who wishes to have it.

We will continue to update this page as more information becomes available.

  • All COVID-19 vaccines given in Australia have passed tests to prove that they are safe and effective.

The vaccine is free for everyone, and while not mandatory is recommended to help protect you and your family from COVID-19.

The Central West Hospital and Health Service Vaccination Program will be delivered by trained Immunisation Teams.

About Third Dose Vaccinations (for people who are immunocompromised)

    • If you are immunocompromised, a third dose is recommended to complete your COVID-19 vaccination course between 2 and 6 months after your second dose.
    • Pfizer is safe and recommended for third doses, regardless of the vaccine type received in your first and second dose COVID-19 vaccinations.
    • Please speak with your GP about your eligibility and a referral letter.

About Booster Dose Vaccinations (for people aged 18 years and over)

    • The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) recommends you have the booster dose 3 months after your second dose.
    • Pfizer is safe and recommended for booster doses, regardless of the vaccine type received in your first and second dose COVID-19 vaccinations.

How to Book a Booster Dose

    • If you had both doses through the CWHHS vaccination program, you will be sent an SMS to let you know that your booster is coming.
    • You will then be allocated an appointment at your nearest clinic. If that time doesn’t suit you will be advised on how to change the appointment.
    • If you had your first, second or both doses through another Australian vaccination program, you are welcome to contact our call centre to book in (provided you meet the eligibility criteria). Phone 1800 953 703 in business hours (8.30 AM to 3.30 PM, Monday to Friday - excluding public holidays). If available, please have Medicare Card/s on hand for this phone call. Or you can also email your details to CW-COVAX@health.qld.gov.au

    Comirnaty (Pfizer) Vaccine

    • Comirnaty (Pfizer) vaccine is available for everyone aged 5 years and over who hasn't already had Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) vaccine.
    • To ensure the greatest protection from COVID-19, those aged 5-11 years are recommended a second dose Pfizer vaccine 8 weeks after the first dose.
    • To ensure the greatest protection from COVID-19, those aged 12 years and over are recommended a second dose Pfizer vaccine 3-6 weeks after the first dose.
    • If your first dose was Pfizer, your second dose must be the same vaccine.

    Vaxzevria (AstraZeneca) Vaccine

    • Note - On 18 August 2021 the Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) approved the name change from AstraZeneca to Vaxzevria (to align it with the global identity).
    • Based on current ATAGI advice, Vaxzevia vaccine is not recommended for anyone under 60 years of age.
    • If you are aged from 18 to 59, you can still go ahead with Vaxzevia vaccination and are recommended to discuss with your GP in order to make an informed decision.
    • If you are aged 59 or under and have already received your first dose of Vaxzevia vaccine without a serious, adverse event, you are safe to book in for your second dose.
    • If your first dose was Vaxzevria, your second dose must be the same vaccine.
    • To ensure the greatest protection from COVID-19, it is recommended you have the second dose as close as possible to 12 weeks after the first dose.
