BreastScreen Queensland’s state-of the-art mobile screening van will visit the Central West region from mid-February to early May next year and women are encouraged to attend and have their free breast screen.

A breast screen was the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before a woman or her doctor could feel anything, BreastScreen Queensland Rockhampton Service Health Promotion Officer Roxanne Hodda said.

"However, if a woman does experience any breast symptoms, she should always consult her doctor as soon as possible,’’ she said.

“On average, one in eight Queensland women will be diagnosed with breast cancer and, of those, 90 per cent will have no family history of the illness.

“Early detection could save your life, with 9 out of 10 women surviving thanks to early detection.

“So, if you haven’t been keeping up to date with important health checks, now’s the time to do so.

“The risk of breast cancer increases with age, that’s why we encourage all women over 40 to have a breast screen ever two years and particularly women between the ages of 50 and 74.’’

The BreastScreen Queensland 2023 schedule for the Central West is:

  • Alpha: 9 February – 13 February
  • Longreach: 15 February – 9 March
  • Winton: 14 March– 22 March
  • Barcaldine: 24 March – 6 April
  • Blackall: 12 April – 21 April
  • Tambo: 26 April – 28 April Ms Hodda said the BreastScreen van visited the Central West every two years.

“This is a great opportunity for women to access breast screening, especially when it is delivered closer to your home,’’ she said.

“So please take advantage of the BreastScreen Queensland mobile service here in the Central West and book an appointment.

“Remember, you need to take care of yourself first so you can look after your children and others in your family and community.”
