Codeine reschedule information for consumers

Over the counter medicines containing codeine will become prescription-only products from 1 February 2018.

Medicines affected include:

  • Ÿcodeine-containing cold and flu medicines including certain day/night products and pharmacy generic brands
  • Ÿcodeine-containing combination analgesics, such as Panadeine, Nurofen Plus, Mersyndol, and pharmacy generic brands.

Speak to your doctor or healthcare provider who may be able to suggest alternative over the counter products, as well as discuss other treatment options. If you think you are unable to manage without codeine and experience some of the symptoms of codeine withdrawal (hot and cold flushes, generalised aches and pains, headaches, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea) speak to your doctor about getting help, or contact an alcohol and drug service, counselling or support group.

For more information about codeine and the upcoming changes, please see the TGA’s consumer factsheet.
