Extended midwifery service supports Theodore families

11 December 2019

Theodore Hospital has introduced an extended midwifery service, supporting young families of the region.

Clinical Midwifery Consultant Kylie Chater said the service visited new mums and their newborns at home, within a 50km radius of Theodore.

“Outpatient and telehealth appointments are available for those who live outside the range,” she said.

The service focuses on individual care before and after birth, with weekly antenatal clinics for expectant mothers to help build relationships with the midwives who will then visit them at home after the birth.

“These visits bridge the gap between hospital and home, providing mothers with professional support from the comfort of their own home.”

The service coordinates the referral process to birthing facilities, and a birthing plan will be developed locally to ensure the safe care of mother and baby.

Telehealth appointments at Theodore Hospital help connect women with their birthing facility without them having to travel away.

The service can help with everything from breastfeeding, bathing, settling, sleeping, referrals, screening, telephone consultations and linking with support services.

“Women are encouraged to call us at any time,” Mrs Chater said. “This is a special journey for mothers and families and we want to ensure they receive the best care possible out here in the bush.”

Mrs Chater said she was proud to be part of the great team at Theodore delivering a great service to the local community.
