Rockhampton Rehabilitation team wins national poster prize

24 October 2019

A team of researchers from Rockhampton Hospital Rehabilitation Unit have been recognised for their work with an award at a national conference.

Heather Richardson and Sandra Greensill attended the 29th Australasian Nurses Association Conference in Brisbane, featuring international and local rehabilitation nursing specialists, nursing academics and subject matter experts providing the latest research in rehabilitation care.

The pair presented their academic poster on behalf of the Rockhampton research team and was awarded the judges’ award for best poster.

The team, Heather (Nurse Educator), Sandra (Nurse Manager), Rehabilitation Specialist Dr Ganesh Gnanasekaran and Occupational Therapist Simone Stokes, have been doing research which started as part of CQ Health’s Research Ready Program.

Their topic is Improving carer confidence: using structured carer training in rehabilitation patients. Their research is around providing appropriate training and practical skills to carers of patients who have experienced a cognitive and/or physical impairment and are being discharged home.

The research involved patients and carers in the Rehabilitation Unit and the team thanks them for participating.

CQ Health Executive Director Rural and District Wide Services Robert Forsythe is extremely proud of the team, not only for their award-winning poster, but for the valuable research they’ve done.

“Our community can take heart knowing we have a great team of professional clinicians who not only provide wonderful care in our Rehabilitation Unit but are committed to improving treatment options by doing research,” Mr Forsythe said.

“Clinicians use evidence-based practice to ensure our patients get the very latest proven care paths, and this is collected through research projects and studies. CQ Health’s Research Ready Program aims to improve healthcare services using solid evidence gathered locally. Support of clinical research is also vital in recruiting and retaining healthcare professionals.”
