Take time out for mental health at free riverbank event

4 October 2019

It’s Queensland Mental Health Week from 5 – 13 October and the Rockhampton community is being encouraged to take time out for their mental health at a free, family friendly event in the Rockhampton Riverside Precinct in Quay Street next Wednesday 9 October from 10.00am to 2.00pm.

Laughing yoga, free haircuts, weaving, painting, gardening, live music and a free barbecue are some of the activities available at the event which will feature close to 40 stallholders from organisations and services around the Rockhampton region.

“Mental health is important at every stage of life, from childhood and adolescence through to adulthood, and during Mental Health Week we are reminded that it’s normal to experience ill-mental health in life,” says event organiser Natalie Prenol from Central Queensland Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs Service.

“We can all feel the pressures of day to day life. With so many things going on around us, it can be easy to forget about looking after ourselves.

“There are many simple and effective things we can do to take care of our mental health and achieve positive wellbeing, like doing the things that are meaningful to us. This event will aim to show people what some of these simple things are.

“You can learn a new skill, get information and tips on staying healthy or simply come on down on your lunchbreak, grab a bean bag and free lunch and enjoy the entertainment in the chill-out zone.”

Aaron Miglioranza and Nathaniel Mooney make up local music act HDU and are proud to be performing at the event. They’ve performed at Mental Health Week events before and have both faced mental health challenges in the past.

They say music has helped them in their own lives and hope it can do the same for others.

“It’s great for keeping you occupied, in any mood,” says Aaron.

Attendees at the event will also have the chance to win one of eight Coles Myer Gift Cards by simply going along – grab a goodie bag once you’ve explored the events activities of offer and you can be in the draw to win a voucher.
