What financial assistance is available?

What may be covered?

Assistance may be provided towards your travel and accommodation costs.

Travel subsidies

Commercial – air, bus or rail – fully paid at lowest available discount fare not including Credit Card Fees, Booking Fees or GST

Private vehicle - $0.30 per km from the patient’s closest public hospital to the closest public treatment facility.

Accommodation subsidies

Commercial - $60 per person per night

Private (family or friends) - $10 per person per night

Patients and escorts will pay the first 4 nights of accommodation per financial year unless eligible for a reduced contribution (e.g. the patient is under 17, or holds a concession card).


An approved escort may also be eligible for a subsidy to travel with a patient if:

  • the patient is under 17 or
  • an escort is required for clinical reasons specified by the Medical Officer

Escorts must be 18 years old and able to provide support/assistance to the patient.

What is not covered?

The PTSS is a subsidy only and does not cover all costs.

The PTSS does not cover:

  • Meals
  • Taxi or Uber fares
  • Rail or bus fares between airport and your accommodation or treating facility
  • GST and credit/debit card fees or booking fees for bookings made by patients
