CQ Mental Health Disaster Recovery Team
Our service provides mental health support to people and communities who have been impacted by natural disasters in Central Queensland. People may experience new mental health concerns after natural disasters. Those with existing mental health concerns often need additional support.
How can we help?
We meet with residents that have been impacted by natural disasters.
We can help with:
- Individual therapy sessions
- Community engagement
- Educational workshops about situations or conditions that cause psychological stress
- Support and education to clinicians and other professionals
- Resilience building
Who do we help?
We provide support to people of any age in the Central Queensland region, who are experiencing, or are at risk of developing, a mental illness as a result of the impact of natural disasters.
What is resilience?
Resilience is the process of adapting well after experiencing hardships and to bounce back from difficult life events.
Resilience is not a trait that people either have or do not have. It involves behaviours, thoughts and actions that can be learned and developed by anyone.
Signs or symptoms of mental health concerns
You can experience signs or symptoms of mental health concerns after a traumatic event. Many times, symptoms do not immediately appear after the trauma and are often misunderstood as unrelated.
Some common symptoms include:
- Increased alcohol and other drug use
- Difficulty with relationships
- Difficulty sleeping
- Financial concerns
- Increased symptoms of depression
- Increased symptoms of anxiety
- Avoiding memories of the event
- Change in socialising
- Physical symptoms such as
- Headaches
- Persistent pain
- Fatigue

The Mental Health Disaster Recovery Team can accept referrals from:
- Friends or family
- Community organisations
- Schools
- General practitioners
- Government Departments
