a perfect introduction to the Central Sterilising Services Department (CSSD) for new staff
a valuable update for staff who have completed the full sterilisation qualification and are required to ensure currency with the latest guidelines/standards
an excellent resource for staff with a vested interest in compliance within the CSSD (e.g. team leaders, nurse unit managers, clinical nurse consultants, practice managers).
The training is being presented by Pauline Grant and Jodie Senescall.
Pauline Grant has been delivering the Certificate III in Sterilisation Services for the Cunningham Centre for five years. Her knowledge and expertise in this area has developed through over 12 years of experience as an Enrolled Nurse in theatre, CSD and outpatients. Pauline also held the role of District Quality Coordinator for a number of years.
Jodie Senescall has led the portfolio for infection control and sterilising within oral health in the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service for seven years. Prior to that, she was in practice management in a private dental clinic.
Jodie and Pauline provided high level advice and performed audits in the recent AS4187 audit for all facilities of the Darling Downs Hospital and Health Service. They are key members of the AS/NZS 4187 Implementation Working Party who are responsible for implementing the recommendations from the audit report. Both Jodie and Pauline are active members of SRACA.

In November 2017 the Central West Hospital and Health Service was fortunate to be able to engage the services of Pauline Grant and Jodie Senescall to provide a Gap analysis in relation to compliance of 4187:2014 and to deliver the Essentials of Sterilising Workshop to the HHS. I would firstly like to thank you for releasing Pauline and Jodie to identify the gaps and provide the associated reports to allow the HHS to work toward compliance. Their extensive knowledge is of great benefit to a small HHS like the Central West.
Secondly I would like to congratulate the developers, organisers and facilitators of the Essentials of Sterilising workshop. This workshop was delivered to a wide range of staff discipline’s from sterilising staff to end users. The content was relevant and delivered in a way that all participants, from what I could see, were engaged for the entire day and every individual took away some new knowledge. In my team in particular it has changed the thinking and practices of staff in relation to the instruments we are using to treat our patients. The increased level of understanding has given them all the knowledge to identify potential risks and to bringing these issues to sterilising staff’s and clinicians attention to reduce the chance of potential harm to patients.
In the weeks after the workshop and still today I observe the staff, (with a smile on my face) actually checking instruments in the SBS before using.
