Yesterday Darling Downs Health staff were recognised by Australian Red Cross Lifeblood Group for giving the most blood donations of all organisations in Toowoomba in 2019.

Darling Downs Health Clinical Nurse Consultant Blood Management Ms Susan Kay said it is a testament to the staff who continuously work hard to put patients first.

“It’s fantastic to have recorded 762 blood donations from Darling Downs Health staff in one year,” Ms Kay said.

“It’s particularly great to see an 56 per cent increase from 2018 in staff donating blood.

“Compassion is one of our core values at Darling Downs Health, and it’s wonderful to see so many of our staff living this value outside of work hours by rolling up their sleeves to give blood.

“I want to thank all the staff who donated and who continue to donate blood, you are giving above and beyond.

“It would be fantastic if we could hold this title of most blood donations again this year.”

Blood donation helps people of all walks of life with different medical conditions.

Donated blood can be given to patients in various circumstances including injuries, surgeries, childbirth, anaemia, blood disorders, cancer treatments, kidney disease, and burns.

Ms Kay encouraged anyone who is thinking about becoming a blood donor to head down to the donor centre, which is now open after hours and weekends.

“It only takes one hour to give blood, and everyone donation can help save the lives of three different people,” she said.
