Positive feedback sees free parenting program come to Cherbourg

31 January 2018

Cherbourg grandmother Lorraine Murray attended the Circle of Security Parenting Program last year.

An internationally acclaimed parenting program will be offered free to parents, grandparents and carers of children up to 10 years in Cherbourg.

The Circle of Security Parenting Series will be held until 22 March at the Gundoo Day Care Centre, Fisher Street. The one-and-a-half hour sessions will be held each Thursday from 9.30am.

Cherbourg Community Health early intervention and parenting clinician Arvind Ponnapalli said the program had received such positive feedback from previous participants, it was decided to run another series.

“Sometimes parents feel lost or without a clue about what their children may need from them,” Mr Ponnapalli said.

“This program is aimed at giving care givers the skills to make sense of what their child is really asking of them. It is based on decades of research about how secure parent-child relationships can be supported and strengthened.”

Cherbourg grandmother Lorraine Murray attended last year’s program in support of her granddaughter, Shanice Twaddle.

“I liked the program and learnt a lot,” Ms Twaddle said.

Learning objectives of the training include:

  • Understanding your child’s emotional world by learning to read the emotional needs
  • Supporting your child’s ability to successfully manage emotions
  • Enhancing the development of your child's self esteem
  • Honouring your intuition and desire for your child to be secure

To register for the free Circle of Security Parenting Series contact Cherbourg Community Health on 4169 8900 or Gundoo Day Care Centre on 4168 2832. Further series are planned for the rest of the year to coincide with the school terms.

Note: Day care options are available to parents with children aged under six years at the Gundoo Day Care Centre for the duration of the program. Day care will incur a fee.
