Toowoomba Hospital-based supervising scientist Neil Dawson has been recognised as a leader in his field.

Mr Dawson, supervising scientist at the Pathology Queensland laboratory at Toowoomba Hospital, was characteristically humble when describing the experience of winning the Regional category of the Health Support Queensland Excellence Awards.

"It’s very flattering to be recognised but I think the award is a reflection of the efforts of our entire team here at the Toowoomba Hospital laboratory," he said.

"Last year we were the first non-metropolitan hospital in Queensland to install a Rotem Sigma machine, which is a great piece of technology that helps us better manage critical bleeding.

"Donated blood is a precious resource so we have implemented evidence-based protocols to minimise wastage and improve patient outcomes, so it’s fair to say we’re leading the way in critical bleeding management.

"Just because you’re in a regional area, it doesn’t mean you can’t be innovative, and as a team we work together to provide the best services we can."

Acting group laboratory manager David Stranger said the award bestowed on Mr Dawson was richly deserved.

"Neil has lead the way and done a lot of hard work in getting everyone on board in support of the implementation of new critical bleeding protocols over the past 12 months," he said.

"We pride ourselves on being a lab with a ‘can-do’ attitude so we are extremely proud of his efforts, and that of the wider team.

"Neil provides tremendous leadership to our younger staff and is a great role model when it comes to thinking outside the square to find a solution to a challenge.

"On behalf of the entire laboratory team I’d like to extend our sincere congratulations to Neil."
