Exercise physiology

Exercise physiologists are allied health professionals who provide advice, exercise and behaviour modification programs.

Exercise physiologists are knowledgeable about the effects that exercise has on the musculoskeletal system, as well as on the cardiovascular and endocrine systems.

Programs help patients get fitter for all around good health, treat patients with a medical condition or provide rehabilitation through exercise.

As part of a multidisciplinary team, exercise physiologists can treat medical conditions including obesity, arthritis, diabetes, cancer, osteoporosis, asthma and cardiovascular disease.

Registration requirements

Individuals seeking employment as an exercise physiologist will require a science-based bachelor degree with a strong exercise physiology component.

All exercise physiologists in Australia need to be accredited with Exercise & Sports Science Australia  (ESSA).
