Career pathways

There are many career pathways you can choose from, whether you’re a qualified and experienced healthcare professional, a graduate or a school student.

As well as our clinical roles, you can also support the health needs of all Queenslanders when you work in one of our support service roles.

If you wish to work on Country, please tell us when you apply for a job.

School based traineeships

If you’re in high school, you can do one of our school based traineeships while you’re doing your Certificate III qualification. Our traineeships will also give you points towards your Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE).

If you’re not sure what you’d like to do, you can explore career pathways and job profiles on the Choose Your Own Health Career website.

Statewide cadetships

Queensland Health offers cadetships in Allied Health, Nursing and Corporate Services. To be a cadet you must be undertaking tertiary studies for a bachelor’s qualification in Australia.

Our cadetships create pathways to employment for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. We aim to increase representation in our workforce to improve Health Equity.

A cadet is employed as a temporary part time employee in their chosen profession, gaining on-the-job skill development. It is required the cadet completes 12 weeks (60 days) of paid work over the 12-month employment period. Cadetship hours are to be completed flexibly around study commitments during the calendar year.

When cadetships are being recruited, they are advertised on Smart Jobs.
