Queensland Psychiatry Training Programs
Queensland Health Directors of Hospital and Health Services in conjunction with the Queensland Branch Training Committee (QBTC) and the Office of Postgraduate Training in Psychiatry (PGT) oversee Psychiatry training rotation placements.
Psychiatry training is a postgraduate medical course for doctors and the successful completion of the program allows trainees eligibility to become Fellows of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists RANZCP (FRANZCP).

Existing/current trainees
Securing an accredited position in Queensland
We encourage you to speak to Service Directors regarding registrar upcoming vacancies, as well as registering through the Resident Medical Officer Queensland Health recruitment campaign. Please see the current contact list of the Clinical Directors (PDF 125 kB) within Queensland and you may wish to contact them prior to commencement of the Resident Medical Officer (RMO) campaign.
As part of the RMO campaign, applicants must complete and submit the following by the closing date of the campaign:
- review the Psychiatry Training Program preference guidelines (PDF 401 kB)
- complete a Psychiatry Training Program preference form (PDF 81 kB) and forward your completed form to Postgraduate Coordinator PGT.PAH@health.qld.gov.au (indicating job preference, stage of training and supporting reasons for preference)
- complete and submit an online application via the Queensland Health RMO campaign portal
- contact the Service Director or Chief Training Supervisor at the training site you have indicated in your preference form to discuss your plans.
If you have any specific training queries regarding selection of your training rotation, please contact your Director of Training.
Stage 3 - sub-specialty training should also:

New applicants
Eligibility to join the Royal Australian and New Zealand Psychiatry Training Program
In Queensland, selection interviews are held for two intakes per year; February and August. Eligibility to apply includes holding general registration and being appointed to an accredited training position.
As a guide, the process to enter the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists Training Program in Queensland is as follows:
- successfully completed a medical degree
- at least 1 year (FTE) of general medical training
- confirmation to PGT of general registration which should be in the form of a copy of your Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) registration
- confirmation to our office of holding an accredited training position, which can be an email from your employer
Once eligibility is met, we will forward further application information or you can visit the Post Graduate Training in Psychiatry website.
How to apply for selection into RANZCP training in Queensland
- Lodgment of application with accompanying documentation to PGT.PAH@health.qld.gov.au (by a minimum of one month prior to interview).
- Referee reports will be sought by our office, from the referees listed on your application.
- Selection interview.
- Upon the advice of a successful interview, further steps are then taken with the Federal College.
Securing an accredited position in Queensland
It is important to note that the selection into the Queensland Psychiatry Training Program is an independent process to that of securing a registrar position (QLD RANZCP accredited training position), and we would encourage you to speak to Service Directors regarding registrar upcoming vacancies, as well as registering through the Resident Medical Officer Queensland Health recruitment campaign.

Allocations and training rotational placements are considered by the Directors of the Hospital and Health Services in conjunction with the QBTC and Office of PGT.
