Genetic Health Queensland's (GHQ) head office is at the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital campus (PDF, 203KB) in Herston, Brisbane. Multiple general adult clinics are held there every week. Multiple general paediatric clinics are held at the Queensland Children’s hospital every week. A visiting clinical geneticist regularly undertakes clinics in the Gold Coast, Toowoomba, Sunshine Coast, Bundaberg, Rockhampton, Mackay, Townsville, and Cairns. We also have genetic counsellors permanently stationed in Townsville, Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast, Toowoomba, and the Gold Coast who undertake weekly clinics.
GHQ offers a number of subspecialty clinics including:
- prenatal clinic in the Centre for Advanced Prenatal Care at RBWH
- cardiac genetics clinic at the RBWH
- renal genetics clinic at the RBWH
All referrals received are reviewed daily. Depending on the reason for referral, and level of complexity, patients are allocated to see either a genetic counsellor, clinical geneticist, or sometimes both.
If a referral is judged urgent (e.g. current pregnancy, or terminal illness) an appointment will be made with the patient as soon as possible. If appropriate, regional patients will be offered the option of having a telehealth appointment.
Note, not all referrals are appropriate for telehealth, in particular when the specialist needs to examine the patient. We strive to see patients as close to their home as possible.
