Radiochemist

Radiochemistry is broadly defined to include any aspect of chemistry involving the measurement and application of radioactive isotopes.

Radiochemists are present in two streams within Queensland Health: environmental and medical.

Environmental radiochemists are situated in the Radiation and Nuclear Science unit at Forensic and Scientific Services (FSS) and provide specialised radiochemical separation techniques for the analysis of radionuclides in environmental samples. Medical radiochemists are situated in hospitals and work with radiopharmaceuticals for patient services.

The scope of work addressed by Radiation and Nuclear Science unit is broad and enables individuals to develop specialist expertise. For example, in radioanalytical techniques, radioecology, method development, or collaboration with national research bodies.

Qualifications

A Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Applied Science is required with a major in chemistry.

Duties

  • Analysing samples for radionuclides pertaining to human and environmental health guidelines
  • Developing and validating radioanalytical methods for naturally occurring and man-made radionuclides
  • Investigating the fate of radionuclides in the Australian environment
  • Conducting research in the broadening field of radiochemistry; including geochemistry, ecology, agriculture and industry
  • Collaborating and participating in professional radiochemistry societies
