Leptospirosis Reference Laboratory

Leptospirosis is a potentially lethal disease and it occurs in all parts of Australia with the highest incidence of the disease in Queensland. Leptospirosis is a notifiable disease.

The Leptospirosis Reference Laboratory is accredited by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Office International des Epizooties (OIE) (2001).

This laboratory provides:

  • expert analysis and advice to public health units, commercial and government pathology providers at local, national and international levels
  • diagnostic support, analysis and advice to international collaborating research groups
  • epidemiological data that contributes to the international watching brief on leptospirosis.

We collaborate extensively with universities and government departments and perform research, surveillance and diagnosis in the human and veterinary fields.
