Food and beverage testing

We play an integral role in keeping food safe for Queenslanders. We work with public and environmental health units throughout the state analysing food and beverages for harmful pathogens, toxins and contaminants. The chemical analysis of food and beverages ensures the safety and security of the consumables that are prepared, marketed, sold and consumed in Australia.

Our services include:

  • undertaking microbiological surveillance of foods available in the marketplace
  • investigating bacteria, viruses and toxins that cause foodborne illness outbreaks in Queensland
  • analysing and identifying bacteria that cause food spoilage
  • analysing food and beverage samples to ensure that nutritional, labelling and country-of-origin claims are correct
  • testing for radioactivity in foods
  • testing for the presence of allergens including gluten, almonds, crustacea, eggs, tree nuts, milk, sesame, soy and more
  • analysing food and beverage products for the presence of preservatives, chemicals and toxins AND identifying biotoxins in consumables such as cigatera and histamines in fish
  • identifying species, production location, contamination and foreign matter in food, also known as food forensics
  • testing food and beverages due to complaints about taste or odour
  • conducting surveillance and national reporting of foodborne disease outbreaks.
