- An International Survey of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation Education and Credentialing Practices 18 April 2024CONCLUSION: We found significant variability in whether ECMO educational curricula are offered at ECMO centers. We also found fewer than half of the ECMO centers surveyed had established credentialing programs for ECMO practitioners. Future studies that assess variability in outcomes among centers with and without standardized educational and credentialing practices are needed.Bhoumesh Patel
- Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy: Prematurely falling out of favour? A 7 year retrospective study from an Australian high-volume centre 18 April 2024CONCLUSION: ESWL remains a legitimate option for the treatment of small and medium sized renal calculi. ESWL stone clearance rates at our centre are higher than published elsewhere and serve as proof to its efficacy. X-ray imaging on the day of the procedure, heavy consultant input and frequent intra-operative imaging are cited as key reasons […]Nishal Patel
- How far has diabetes-related foot disease research progressed in Australia? A bibliometric review (1970-2023) 17 April 2024CONCLUSIONS: Australian DFD research increased steadily until more dramatic increases were seen over the past decade. Most research received no funding and mainly investigated etiology, existing treatments or health services. Australian DFD researchers appear to be very productive, particularly in recent times, despite minimal funding indicating their resilience. However, if the field is to continue […]Peta E Tehan
- Exploring adult inpatients' perceptions, understanding and preferences regarding the term 'malnutrition': A qualitative study 17 April 2024CONCLUSION: Findings highlight variations in patients' perceptions and understanding of the term 'malnutrition' and differences in the terms used by patients and health workers to describe malnutrition.Sarah Mackay
- Exploring management and outcomes of elderly patients with glioblastoma using data from two randomised trials (GEINO1401/EX-TEM) 17 April 2024CONCLUSION: In this trial population of predominantly fit EP, survival was similar to YP despite a proportion receiving less aggressive therapy at diagnosis and recurrence. Advancing age does not appear to be an adverse prognostic factor for glioblastoma when patients are fit for treatment, and a less aggressive approach in selected patients may not compromise […]Lucy Gately
- Atrial Shunt Device Effects on Cardiac Structure and Function in Heart Failure With Preserved Ejection Fraction: The REDUCE LAP-HF II Randomized Clinical Trial 17 April 2024CONCLUSIONS AND RELEVANCE: In this post hoc analysis of the REDUCE LAP-HF II trial, over 2 years of follow-up, atrial shunting led to reverse remodeling of left-sided chambers and increases in volume of right-sided chambers consistent with the shunt flow but no change in RV systolic function compared with sham. Changes in cardiac structure/function were […]Ravi B Patel
- Spot urinary sodium guided titration of intravenous diuretic therapy in acute heart failure: A pilot randomised controlled trial 17 April 2024CONCLUSION: UNa-guided titration of diuretic therapy in AHF is feasible and safer than titration based on clinical signs and symptoms of congestion, with more effective decongestion at 48 hours. Further large-scale trials are needed to determine if the superiority of this approach translates into improved patient outcomes.Maryam Khorramshahi Bayat
- Evaluating Pilot Implementation of 'PenCS Flu Topbar' App in Medical Practices to Improve National Immunisation Program-Funded Seasonal Influenza Vaccination in Central Queensland, Australia 16 April 2024CONCLUSIONS: Our evaluation indicated that the 'PenCS Flu Topbar' app is useful for identifying the patients eligible for NIP-funded influenza vaccination and is likely to increase NIP-funded influenza vaccine coverage in the eligible populations. Future impact evaluation including a greater number of practices and a wider geographical area is essential.Gulam Khandaker
- Patient, surgical and hospital factors predicting actual first-day mobilisation after hip fracture surgery: An observational cohort study 15 April 2024CONCLUSIONS: Both non-modifiable and modifiable patient and surgical factors influence first-day mobilisation after hip fracture surgery. Reducing time to surgery might assist future quality improvement efforts to increase Day-1 postoperative mobility.Victoria Woodcroft-Brown
- First Isolation of Japanese Encephalitis Virus Genotype IV from Mosquitoes in Australia 15 April 2024Introduction: Widespread transmission of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) genotype four (GIV) occurred across mainland Australia in 2022. This resulted in forty-five human cases, including seven deaths, and the identification of JEV infection in over 80 commercial piggeries. Materials and Methods: We collected mosquitoes which were trapped using CO(2)-baited light traps deployed near piggeries reporting disease […]Alyssa T Pyke
- [177Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 plus enzalutamide in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (ENZA-p): an open-label, multicentre, randomised, phase 2 trial 15 April 2024BACKGROUND: Enzalutamide and lutetium-177 [^(177)Lu]Lu-prostate-specific membrane antigen (PSMA)-617 both improve overall survival in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer. Androgen and PSMA receptors have a close intracellular relationship, with data suggesting complementary benefit if targeted concurrently. In this study, we assessed the activity and safety of enzalutamide plus adaptive-dosed [^(177)Lu]Lu-PSMA-617 versus enzalutamide alone as first-line […]Louise Emmett
- Central Venous Access Device-Associated Skin Complications in Adults with Cancer: A Prospective Observational Study 15 April 2024CONCLUSION: Central venous access device-associated skin complications are a significant, potentially avoidable injury, requiring cancer nurses to be aware of high-risk groups and use evidence-based preventative and treatment strategies.Nicole C Gavin
- Timepoint for return to occupations post-burn injury using the Canadian Occupational Performance Measure (COPM) 14 April 2024CONCLUSION: Based on this study, it is suggested that when using the COPM assessment in a tertiary burn setting, re-measurement be completed no earlier than 3 months and later than 12 months from burn injury, or upon discharge from the service. The findings from this study will be translated into clinical practice at this facility.Andrea Mc Kittrick
- Optimising admission to scope time for acute GI bleeding (UGIB): retrospective comparative analysis of the timing of endoscopy for UGIB in a Queensland quaternary centre following international recommendations for best practice 13 April 2024No abstractAnthony Bergin
