Lymphoedema is a chronic condition, where fluid (called lymph) collects in a part of the body causing it to swell. It occurs either because there is too much fluid for a normal lymphatic system to process, or the lymphatic system isn’t working properly.

People with lymphoedema around the world describe having a difficult time finding a doctor with expertise in this area, which is why RBWH senior physiotherapist Natalie is conducting research through Griffith University, supported by RBWH, that explores lymphoedema from the perspective of Australian medical interns.

In many countries, medical lymphoedema specialists are not available. People with lymphoedema describe this as having a big impact on their lives, often limiting access to timely treatment and care, Natalie said.

It is hoped that findings from this research will help us to understand more about how lymphoedema is taught within medical training, what the impacts are to healthcare services, and how access to medical care for lymphoedema can be improved. 🙌

Well that’s is wonderful that she can help and pick it up . But why can’t they have others in other Hospitals to help others I have had a swollen under the knee it has moved around my leg . Nurses and doctors can’t touch it as it hurts can’t lean on it . But no one does anything to help me it’s painful I had a fall many years ago. And I think it just got worse feel’s fluidity starting in the other leg now too . So why not train others in each hospital to help . To far to go to RBWH .

Go Nat! 👏👏

Yessss Natty! Gorgeous pic of you, my clever friend ❤️

This was misdiagnosed as cellulitis but apparently it's lymphoma.

All Queensland newborn babies will now be eligible for a free RSV immunisation, which will keep little ones protected from respiratory illness in the cooler months. 🫁

RSV is a highly contagious viral infection that infects upper airways and lungs and can lead you to require hospitalisation.

New parents Sarah and George joined RBWH midwife Sandy in hearing more about the RSV immunisation program when it was announced yesterday.

We are excited to have commenced this RSV immunisation program to protect our littlest patients and keep them safe from illness, Sandy said. 💓

Im a mum of three boys. I never wanted a girl because she would turn out to be like me - and guess what? The boys are exactly like me! Theyre opinionated and strong willed and they believe in themselves. I’d like to think that I taught them that. Its just been me and the boys for a long time.

RBWH hyperbaric chamber supervisor Bob goes on a deep dive with his patients to get them back to health. ⚓🤿

After leaving the military in 1986 where Bob was a Navy clearance diver, Bob began a career working offshore where he began his saturation diving course in 1990 in Scotland. This then kicked off his 20-year long career as a saturation diver. 🛥️

In 2020, Bob took up a role as senior hyperbaric chamber supervisor at the RBWH where he has the important job of supervising the diving side of patients going through a treatment.

Hyperbaric oxygen treatment is the inhalation of 100% oxygen inside a treatment chamber at a pressure greater than sea level.

“The doctors are the ones administering the drug which is the oxygen, but I am controlling the dive itself which is all done via a computerised panel, Bob said.

“We monitor the dive constantly by calculating what the decompression obligation is, so that its not too much pressure for the patients because they dont have a nitrogen load.” 🫧

What is it used to treat?

Further to my earlier comment it changed my life after treatment for cancer. Would go again in a heartbeat as it made such a difference. Bob was a friendly face each day to greet before each treatment.

Well done Bob thanks for your work ❤️👍

Always a friendly face.

How often is the chamber used for divers? Or is it mostly for wounds?

An influenza vaccine can keep you safe during the cooler months, but with egg-based, adjuvanted, high-dose and cell-based vaccines available - which one should you get?

RBWH vaccination clinical nurse consultant Victoria explains the various options.

🥚 Egg-based influenza vaccines are prepared from purified inactivated influenza virus that has been cultivated in embryonated hens eggs, and they include the standard dose.
Suitable for: 6 months - 64 years old.

💉Adjuvanted and high-dose influenza vaccines are both ‘enhanced’ vaccines specifically designed to increase the response of the immune system to the vaccine. Adjuvanted influenza vaccines contain the standard amount of antigen but with an adjuvant (a compound that stimulates a higher immune response to a vaccine) added.
Suitable for: over 65 years old.

🧫Cell-based influenza vaccines are prepared from purified inactivated influenza virus that has been propagated in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells.
Suitable for: 6 months - 64 years old.

Consult with your immunisation provider for individualised advice on the influenza vaccines available to you.
