Flu and hand hygiene (Feel Good Facts campaign)

Feel Good Facts is a new campaign aimed at reminding Queenslanders to use healthy habits all year round.

It’s a handle for a series of quick little animations that bring to life all our different health facts and healthy habits, where there tends to be a gap between knowledge and behaviour.

They are fun-sized chunks of information giving tips on how to make the Queensland life feel even better.

The issue

In 2017, Queensland public hospitals confirmed 53,451 notifications of influenza (flu), resulting in 5710 hospital admissions (678 to Intensive Care). This represents one of the worst flu seasons that Queensland and Australia have ever seen.

Flu is an acute viral illness that mainly affects the respiratory system. The disease varies in severity and may be mild to moderate in some but severe in others. For tropical regions like Queensland, the flu pattern can be more variable—occurring annually in the southern and central areas typically between May and October.

The campaign

The campaign aims to remind adults to adopt healthy habits in their daily lives, as well as, be role models to children to help them build healthy lifelong behaviours and practices that can help prevent the spread of flu.

Key messages include:

  • Stay at home if you have flu symptoms
  • Cover your coughs and sneezes
  • Dispose of tissues immediately after use
  • Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds OR use a hand sanitizer
  • Getting vaccinated every year is the best way to protect yourself against the flu.
