Novartis flu vaccine not used in Queensland

Monday 1 December 2014

Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young has assured Queensland residents that they are not at risk of exposure to the Novartis flu vaccine FLUAD.

Dr Young moved quickly to issue the message, following today’s online story in The Courier-Mail which suggested a possible link between 13 deaths in Italy and FLUAD, a product made by Swiss Pharmaceutical company Novartis.

“Queensland’s suppliers of flu vaccines do not include Novartis,” Dr Young said.

“FLUAD is also not listed as a vaccine for Australia on the Novartis website.

“It is important to note that there is no proof yet that FLUAD led to the deaths of the 13 people in Italy, and that further studies are being undertaken to determine the cause of deaths.”

Queensland Health recommends annual flu vaccinations for any person aged six months or older.
