Bridge to Brisbane participants – get training!
Queensland Health has teamed up with Exercise & Sports Science Australia to create a training guide for Bridge to Brisbane participants.
The eight week guide provides exercise plans aimed at preparing participants well before the event day. Nutrition and motivation tips are also available to accompany the training guide.
Queensland’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Jeannette Young, said the training guide will assist Queenslanders of various ages to train for the 5km or 10km walk or run.
“When our bodies and minds are healthy, we feel better, we look better, and have more energy,” she said.
“That’s what makes training for the Bridge to Brisbane a great way to get more out of life.
“Whether you want to tackle a 5km walk or 10km run, taking part is a great way to motivate yourself, your family and your friends to be more active.
“The eight week training guide will get you started on your fitness journey and help to prepare you for one of Brisbane’s favourite events.”
Exercise & Sports Science Australia CEO, Anita Hobson-Powell, explains that “A periodic exercise program designed by an exercise professional is the best way to ensure you’re gradually building up your long distance running and fitness, to help minimise the risk of injury.”
“The benefits of undertaking an exercise program prior to a long-distance running event can be both physiological and psychological,” she said.
“It includes improving body temperature, circulation, heart and respiration, preparing the body for higher intensity exercise, mentally preparing, and reducing the risk of an injury occurring during the run.”
Accredited Exercise Physiologist, Beth Sheehan, also notes that, “From a joint perspective, running sends 1.5-3.0 times an individual’s body weight through their entire body.”
“This repetitive impact over a longer distance and time will potentially have long term affects if you are not adequately prepared,” she said.
Dr Young said Queensland Health has partnered with Bridge to Brisbane this year, providing $100,000 towards the event.
“We’re supporting the community event as part of our Healthier. Happier. campaign, as Bridge to Brisbane could be a great first step towards a healthier, happier lifestyle,” she said.
“It’s not about getting the fastest time; it’s about giving it a go and doing something to be a little more active in your life every day.”
