Don't die of a broken heart
On World Heart Day, Queenslanders are being asked to make a simple vow not to smoke, to eat more healthily, and to be more active to protect their heart health.
“We ask someone ‘to have a heart’, we talk about a sportsperson as ‘having real heart’, and we talk about people being ‘heart-broken’,” said Kaye Pulsford, Executive Director, Preventive Health Branch, Queensland Health.
“No other vital organ seems to get quite the same amount of love in the English language. And there’s a reason for that. Our hearts are at the very core of our aliveness.
“When someone has been injured or become ill, one of the first things first responders or clinicians do is check their heartbeat.
“When something goes wrong with our hearts, the trouble is very real.
“On World Heart Day, it’s worth remembering that cardiovascular disease is the world’s number one cause of death.
“Cardiovascular disease—including heart disease and stroke—kills 17.5 million people every year, according to the World Heart Foundation.
“In Queensland, the Report of the Chief Health Officer said that of all 10,233 premature deaths—those that occur in persons less than 75 years old—1909 were from cardiovascular disease.
“The positive thing is that our lifestyles can alter our risks for cardio vascular disease.
“So, on World Heart Day, let’s check in with our hearts and those of the people we know and love, and see how they’re doing.
“Let’s make a simple vow and encourage others to make it too – not to smoke, to eat more healthily, and to be more active.”
