Empowering the state's health workforce
Ensuring Queenslanders have access to a high quality, responsive and sustainable healthcare system is the focus of Queensland Health’s new 10-year workforce strategy.
Director-General of Queensland Health, Michael Walsh, today launched the Advancing health service delivery through workforce: A strategy for Queensland 2017-2026.
“The strategy sets the vision and overarching framework for responding to health workforce priorities in Queensland over the next ten years,” Mr Walsh said.
“Our capacity to provide quality care and to ensure patient safety depends on us having an educated, skilled workforce supported by an efficient and responsive education system and the commitment to work smartly, to innovate, to embrace new technology, and to deliver responsive, safe health care that meets consumer needs and expectations.
“We recognise that the growth and development of the health workforce will play a key role in ensuring Queenslanders have access to high quality, responsive healthcare into the future.”
Mr Walsh said the strategy supports health care workers to be consumer focussed, identify barriers, improve systems and safely innovate to improve outcomes for patients.
“This new workforce strategy will prioritise and guide our efforts across areas such as workforce design, clinical education and training, leadership, culture, and employment regulation and administration.”
“It will help us to empower the health workforce of Queensland by supporting the development of healthcare cultures and environments characterised by capability, autonomy and engagement.”
The strategy sets out planned activities across four focus areas:
- Designing the workforce – Responsive workforce models, contemporary role design, interdisciplinary practice
- Enabling the workforce – Supportive policy and legislation, flexible employment arrangements, enhancing insights into the workforce to inform planning
- Strengthening the workforce – Clinical education and training, professional learning and development, contemporary leadership and culture, attraction and retention
- Keeping connected – collaboration and engagement, stakeholder partnerships, strategic integrated planning
The workforce strategy will be supported by a number of other strategies, including the recently-released Medical Practitioner Workforce Plan for Queensland, and Queensland’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Workforce Strategic Framework.
“I look forward to seeing our strengthened efforts to support our capable, responsive and motivated health workforce making a difference to Queenslanders, through the delivery of safe and effective healthcare services,” Mr Walsh said.
